[KW013] Story Continuation: The Winter of Deceit

The heavy iron door slammed shut, plunging the derelict warehouse back into suffocating darkness. The sound of her father’s luxury SUV engine revving and fading into the snowy night was the most agonizing sound Jessica had ever heard.

She looked down at her hands. They were calloused, scarred, and trembling violently from the freezing draft sweeping through the broken windows. This wasn’t her body. This wasn’t her life. The sinister, mocking smile that Grace had flashed her over her father’s shoulder burned into Jessica’s mind.

“Hey! Grace! I know you’re in there!” a gruff, menacing voice echoed from the corridor outside the room. Heavy boots stomped against the concrete.

Jessica’s new heart pounded against her ribs. The narration had warned of a life-threatening fate. This must be it. Grace hadn’t just stolen Jessica’s wealth; she had left Jessica to face the deadly consequences of Grace’s own desperate life.

The door was kicked open. Two large men in heavy winter coats stepped in, holding flashlights that blinded her.

“Your old man owes us fifty grand, Grace,” the taller man sneered, stepping closer. “He said you had something valuable to give us to clear the debt. Where is it?”

Jessica backed away, her mind racing. She was a billionaire’s daughter, educated in elite boarding schools, trained to take over a multinational corporation. She didn’t know how to fight street thugs, but she knew how to negotiate under pressure.

“Stop right there,” Jessica commanded. The voice that came out was softer, weaker than her own, but the authoritative tone remained identical to the CEO in training.

The men paused, momentarily confused by the sudden shift in the usually meek girl’s demeanor.

“You’re looking for fifty thousand dollars,” Jessica said, straightening her posture despite the biting cold. “If you harm me, you get nothing. If you listen to me, I can get you double that amount by tomorrow morning.”

The shorter man laughed harshly. “You? Double? You don’t have two pennies to rub together, kid.”

“I have leverage,” Jessica lied smoothly, using the sharp business acumen her father had taught her. “My father… my stepfather was running a skimming operation on the Southside docks. I have the ledger. The names, the accounts, everything. It’s worth a lot more than fifty grand to the right buyer. Or to the feds.”

The men exchanged a nervous glance. The bluff was risky, but it was the only play she had.

“Where is it?” the tall man demanded, stepping closer but keeping his hands to himself.

“Hidden,” Jessica replied, her eyes locked onto his. “And if I don’t check in with a specific contact in exactly one hour, it gets mailed to the district attorney. You want your money? You let me walk out of here right now, and I will contact you with the drop location tomorrow.”

The thugs hesitated, weighing the risk. The sheer confidence radiating from the girl who was supposed to be a terrified victim unsettled them. Finally, the taller man scoffed, backing away. “You have twenty-four hours, Grace. If you’re lying, there isn’t a hole deep enough for you to hide in.”

They turned and left into the snowy night. Jessica exhaled a shaky breath, her knees almost buckling. She had survived the immediate threat, but the war was just beginning.

The Return to the Estate

It took Jessica three agonizing hours to walk through the blizzard to the upscale neighborhood of Silver Lake. Her thin canvas shoes were soaked, and her cheap jacket offered no protection against the biting wind.

She stood before the towering wrought-iron gates of her own home. The massive stone mansion glowed warmly in the distance. Security cameras tracked her movement as she approached the intercom.

She pressed the button. “Security, this is an emergency. Open the gate.”

“Identify yourself,” the guard’s voice crackled.

“It’s Jessica. Jessica Sterling. I know I don’t look like her, but you have to listen to me—”

“Nice try, kid,” the guard interrupted. “Miss Sterling has been home for hours. Get off the property before I call the cops.”

“Wait! Tell my father that the code word for the Swiss vault is ‘Amaryllis’!” Jessica shouted, desperate. It was a family secret, something only she and her parents knew.

Silence hung on the line. A minute later, the heavy gates slowly swung open.

Jessica ran up the winding driveway, her lungs burning. When she reached the front doors, they opened to reveal her father, looking exhausted and confused, flanked by two security guards.

Behind him, wearing a plush silk robe and sipping hot cocoa, was Grace. She wore Jessica’s face perfectly, but her posture, the way she held the cup—it was all wrong.

“Who are you?” Mr. Sterling asked, staring at the freezing girl on his porch. “How do you know that word?”

“Dad, it’s me,” Jessica pleaded, tears freezing on her cheeks. “She used something… a system. She stole my body. I’m Jessica!”

Grace let out a perfect, melodramatic gasp. “Daddy, who is this crazy person? Is she one of those stalkers we read about?” She rushed to Mr. Sterling’s side, clinging to his arm exactly the way Jessica used to when she was five years old. It was a calculated manipulation.

Mr. Sterling looked between the two girls. His eyes were full of doubt. “Call the police,” he whispered to the guard.

“Dad, no!” Jessica stepped forward, ignoring the guards raising their hands. “Ask her about the merger with Vanguard Tech! Ask her why we decided to short the stock last Tuesday! She doesn’t know! She only has my face; she doesn’t have my mind!”

Grace’s fake smile faltered for a fraction of a second. She didn’t know anything about corporate finance.

“Daddy, my head hurts,” Grace whimpered, pressing her stolen face into his shoulder. “The kidnapping attempt… it traumatized me. I can’t think about business right now.”

Mr. Sterling’s protective instincts kicked in. He glared at Jessica. “Take her away. If she comes back, press charges.”

As the guards grabbed Jessica’s arms, dragging her back out into the snow, she locked eyes with Grace. The imposter was smirking again, a look of absolute triumph on her face.

But Jessica stopped struggling. She went limp, allowing the guards to pull her away. The panic in her chest was replaced by a cold, calculating fury. Grace had made a critical error. She had underestimated the mind inside the body. Grace had stolen a billion-dollar life, but she had no idea how to live it.

Enjoy the luxury while it lasts, Grace, Jessica thought as the gates slammed shut behind her. Because tomorrow, I’m coming for my empire. And I’m going to destroy you with the very system you thought you stole.
