[SC026] The Continuation of the Story…

The heavy thud of Officer Alvarez’s boots hitting the asphalt was followed immediately by the roar of his cruiser’s engine. Sarah fumbled with her keys, her hands shaking so violently she dropped her driver’s license onto the floor mats.

“Come on, come on!” she muttered to herself, finally throwing the minivan into drive.

Ahead of her, Officer Alvarez hit the sirens. The piercing wail-yelp tore through the quiet suburban evening, parting the light traffic like the Red Sea. Sarah gripped the steering wheel until her knuckles turned white, keeping her bumper firmly glued to the back of the speeding patrol car.

Inside the cruiser, Alvarez was already on the radio. “Dispatch, this is Unit 42. I am currently escorting a civilian vehicle to 1428 Elm Street. Code 3.”

“Copy that, 42. Nature of the emergency?” the dispatcher’s crackly voice replied.

Alvarez took a deep breath. “It’s Mischief Mikey, dispatch. He’s home alone. I repeat, the asset is unsupervised.”

There was a long, heavy silence on the radio. When the dispatcher finally replied, her voice lacked its usual monotone professionalism. “Mother of God. I’ll send backup. Fire and rescue on standby just in case. May God have mercy on that neighborhood.”

Mischief Mikey wasn’t a criminal. He was a twelve-year-old boy with an IQ that rivaled MIT professors, an unlimited imagination, and zero impulse control. Last summer, he had managed to hack the neighborhood sprinkler system to play the synchronized water-fountain show from the Bellagio in Las Vegas, accidentally flooding three driveways. During Halloween, he had engineered a robotic grim reaper that was so terrifyingly realistic it made the mailman quit on the spot. Leaving him alone was the equivalent of leaving a lit match next to a fireworks factory.

Within four minutes, the police cruiser and the minivan screeched to a halt in front of a pleasant, two-story colonial home. On the outside, everything looked perfectly normal. Not a blade of grass was out of place.

Alvarez stepped out of his car, his hand instinctively resting on his utility belt. Sarah jumped out of her minivan, rushing to his side.

“Officer, I only went to the grocery store! I was gone for thirty minutes!” Sarah panicked, tears welling in her eyes. “I thought, he’s twelve now, he can play video games for half an hour! What if he burned the house down?”

“Stay behind me, ma’am,” Alvarez instructed, his voice low and steady. “With Mikey, the house looking completely normal is usually a very bad sign. It means he’s focused.”

They walked up the driveway. As they approached the front porch, Alvarez noticed a thin, nearly invisible piece of fishing line stretched across the bottom step. He stopped dead in his tracks, holding his hand up to halt Sarah.

“Tripwire,” Alvarez whispered. “Classic Mikey. Step over it.”

They carefully bypassed the string. Alvarez reached for the front doorknob. It was unlocked. He gently pushed the door open, wincing as the hinges creaked.

“Mikey?” Sarah called out, her voice trembling. “Honey, Mommy’s home!”

“Stop!” a high-pitched, authoritative voice echoed from the top of the stairs.

Alvarez and Sarah froze. Standing at the top of the landing was Mikey. He was wearing oversized safety goggles, a tool belt that was far too large for his waist, and he was holding a remote control that looked like it had been salvaged from an old RC car.

“Mikey, what is going on here?” Sarah demanded, stepping forward.

“Mom, don’t step on the rug!” Mikey yelled, waving his hands frantically.

Alvarez looked down. The Persian rug in the entryway looked completely normal, but upon closer inspection, the edges were slightly elevated.

“What’s under the rug, kid?” Alvarez asked, shining his tactical flashlight onto the fabric.

“Just a minor counter-measure,” Mikey explained casually, pushing his safety goggles up onto his forehead. “When you left, Mom, I saw a suspicious van park across the street. Two guys got out with crowbars. They went around to the back door.”

Sarah gasped, grabbing Alvarez’s arm. “Burglars? Oh my god, Mikey, are you hurt?”

“Hurt? No. I was bored,” Mikey grinned. “So, I improvised.”

Alvarez felt a bead of sweat roll down his neck. “Mikey… where are the men now?”

Before the boy could answer, a muffled, desperate groan echoed from the living room to their left. Alvarez drew his taser, motioning for Sarah to stay back. He slowly crept around the corner into the living room, flipping on the wall switch.

What he saw defied all logic and standard police training.

Two men, dressed in stereotypical dark clothing and ski masks, were suspended three feet in the air. They were entirely wrapped in thick layers of heavy-duty industrial shrink wrap, looking like two oversized caterpillars. They were hanging from a complex pulley system attached to the reinforced ceiling beams. Furthermore, they were completely covered from head to toe in what looked like rainbow-colored glitter and maple syrup.

One of the burglars managed to spit out a mouthful of glitter. “Please,” he whimpered, looking at the police officer with tears in his eyes. “Arrest us. Just get us away from that kid. He’s a monster.”

Alvarez stood completely utterly speechless. He lowered his taser. He looked at the intricate web of ropes, the strategically placed tripwires, and the empty bottles of Aunt Jemima on the floor.

Mikey strolled into the room, holding his remote control. “The back door lock was weak, so I let them break in. Once they stepped into the kitchen, they hit the pressure plate. That triggered the syrup drop, which temporarily blinded them, causing them to slip into the shrink-wrap snare I rigged to the ceiling fan motor.”

Sarah walked into the room, her jaw dropping. She looked at the two grown men dangling from her ceiling, then looked down at her son. “Mikey… you used my good maple syrup for this?”

Alvarez let out a sudden, booming laugh. He couldn’t help it. The sheer absurdity of the situation broke all of his professional composure. He reached for his radio.

“Dispatch, this is Unit 42. The situation at Elm Street is secure.”

“Copy that, 42. What is the status of the asset?”

Alvarez looked at Mikey, who was now proudly adjusting his tool belt. “The asset is fine, Dispatch. In fact, you can call off the backup. Just send a transport van. We have two suspects in custody for attempted burglary.”

“Understood, 42. Did you apprehend them?”

“Negative, dispatch,” Alvarez smirked. “Mischief Mikey apprehended them. I’m just here to cut them down.”

An hour later, the two sticky, glittering burglars were shoved into the back of a police van, profusely thanking the officers for taking them to jail. The neighborhood, which had gathered outside to watch the commotion, was murmuring with a mix of shock and awe.

Officer Alvarez stood on the porch with Sarah and Mikey. He handed Sarah back her driver’s license, the same one he had held during the frantic traffic stop.

“I won’t write you a ticket for speeding today, ma’am,” Alvarez said, tipping his hat. “Given the circumstances, your haste was justified. Though, next time, maybe don’t leave him alone.”

“I promise, Officer,” Sarah sighed, resting her hand on Mikey’s shoulder. “From now on, he comes to the grocery store with me.”

Mikey frowned. “But Mom, the grocery store is boring! Unless… I could optimize their conveyor belt system?”

Alvarez chuckled, walking down the steps toward his cruiser. “Don’t even think about it, kid. Leave the grocery store alone.” As he opened his car door, he looked back at the house, shaking his head with a smile. The legend of Mischief Mikey hadn’t just survived the day; it had grown. And while Alvarez hoped he wouldn’t have to respond to this address anytime soon, he knew deep down that in this precinct, life was never boring when Mikey was around.
