Chloe stared down at the sleek, embossed business card resting in the palm of her hand. It felt uncharacteristically heavy, a small rectangular piece of premium cardstock that simply read Julian Vance, Chief Executive Officer, Vance Global Enterprise. She had only stepped in to help him pick up some scattered documents when a careless cyclist had bumped into him, yet he had handed her this card with a look of intense sincerity, telling her to call if she ever found herself in any difficulties.
Julian adjusted the cuffs of his tailored navy suit, preparing to walk towards his waiting town car. Beside him, his loyal assistant, Marcus, let out a heavy sigh, glancing at the buzzing screen of his tablet.
“Sir, your grandfather just called the office again,” Marcus said, his voice laced with mild exhaustion. “He is becoming incredibly anxious about your marital status. He’s already arranged three more blind dates for this upcoming weekend with the daughters of his board members. He insists that it is time for you to settle down.”
Julian stopped in his tracks, his jaw clenching. A look of sheer disdain crossed his striking features. “Cancel them, Marcus. You know exactly how I feel about those setups. They are nothing but calculated business transactions disguised as romance. Every single woman he introduces me to is a gold-digging socialite who cares more about the Vance family fortune and my black credit card than they do about me as a person. I refuse to entertain it.”
“I understand, sir,” Marcus replied hesitantly. “But Arthur Vance is not a man who takes no for an answer. If you don’t show up, he threatened to show up at the corporate headquarters and drag you to the altar himself.”
Julian rubbed his temples, feeling the onset of a massive migraine. He needed a solution, and he needed it immediately. As he opened his eyes, his gaze drifted back to Chloe. She was still standing near the park bench, carefully placing his business card into her worn canvas tote bag. She wore a simple pastel sweater and a modest skirt, her hair tied back in a messy bun. There was an undeniable innocence and authenticity about her. She hadn’t recognized him. She hadn’t batted an eyelash at his expensive watch or his custom suit. She had simply helped a stranger.
A wild, desperate idea suddenly sparked in Julian’s mind. It was reckless, entirely out of character, and potentially disastrous, but it was the only way out.
“Marcus,” Julian murmured, his eyes locked on Chloe. “I think I just found the solution to our grandfather problem.”
Before Marcus could protest, Julian spun around and strode purposefully back toward the young woman. Chloe looked up, startled as the tall, imposing figure of the CEO loomed over her once again.
“Excuse me,” Julian said, his voice a smooth, commanding baritone that commanded immediate attention. “I realize this is going to sound incredibly unorthodox, especially coming from a man you met less than five minutes ago, but I need your help. And in return, I am willing to compensate you extremely well.”
Chloe blinked, taking a cautious step back. “Compensate me? I don’t understand. I already told you, I didn’t help you with your papers for a reward. It was just basic human decency.”
“I know,” Julian said, offering a rare, genuine smile that softened the hard angles of his face. “And that is precisely why I am asking you. My name is Julian Vance. I run a massive corporation, and my grandfather is currently trying to force me into a marriage with women who only want my money. I need someone to pretend to be my fiancée. Just for six months. If you agree to play the part, I will pay you one hundred thousand dollars, plus any expenses you might incur.”
Chloe’s jaw dropped. The street noise around them seemed to fade into a muffled buzz. “One hundred thousand dollars? Are you completely out of your mind? You want me to be your fake fiancée?”
“I am entirely serious,” Julian stated, taking a step closer. “You get a massive financial boost, and I get my grandfather off my back so I can focus on my company. It is a mutually beneficial contract. No strings attached, completely professional. We attend a few family dinners, smile for the cameras at charity galas, and then we amicably part ways.”
Chloe hesitated. Her heart was hammering against her ribs. She was a nursing student drowning in student loan debt, working two grueling night shifts at a local diner just to keep her small apartment. One hundred thousand dollars would not just change her life; it would completely rewrite her future. She looked into Julian’s dark, intense eyes. He looked desperate, but there was an undeniable honor in his gaze. He wasn’t trying to take advantage of her; he was offering a business deal.
“What exactly would I have to do?” Chloe asked, her voice trembling slightly.
“Just be yourself,” Julian replied, sensing her walls coming down. “My grandfather is a shrewd man. He can spot a fake socialite from a mile away. But you? You are genuine. You are exactly the kind of grounded, real person he claims I need in my life. We will draw up a legal contract, ensuring your safety and your payout.”
Chloe took a deep breath, clutching the strap of her tote bag. “Okay. Six months. Professional boundaries only. And I get half the money upfront to pay off my tuition.”
“Deal,” Julian said, extending his hand. Chloe took it, feeling the warmth and strength of his grip. The contract was sealed.
Two days later, Chloe found herself sitting in the passenger seat of Julian’s sleek silver Bentley, driving up a winding private road toward the sprawling Vance family estate. She was wearing a beautiful, understated emerald green dress that Julian had sent to her apartment, along with a discreet but breathtaking diamond ring that felt heavy on her left hand.
“Nervous?” Julian asked, glancing at her from the driver’s seat.
“Terrified,” Chloe admitted honestly. “What if he sees right through me? What if I use the wrong fork at dinner?”
Julian chuckled softly. “Arthur Vance doesn’t care about forks. He cares about character. Just remember our story. We met at a coffee shop, bonded over a shared love of classic literature, and fell quietly in love. You don’t care about my money, and I love you for your ambition and kindness.”
The heavy oak doors of the mansion were opened by a stoic butler, leading them into a grand foyer that looked like a museum. Waiting in the center of the room, leaning heavily on a silver-tipped cane, was Arthur Vance. The elderly man had piercing blue eyes that immediately locked onto Chloe, analyzing her from head to toe.
“So,” Arthur barked, his voice echoing in the large hall. “This is the mystery woman who finally managed to tie down the elusive Julian Vance. Come here, girl. Let me look at you.”
Chloe stood tall, offering a warm, polite smile as she approached the patriarch. “It is a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Vance. Julian has told me wonderful things about you.”
Arthur snorted. “I highly doubt that. My grandson thinks I’m an interfering old fool. Come into the study. I want a word with you alone.”
Julian tensed, stepping forward. “Grandfather, that isn’t necessary—”
“Hush, boy,” Arthur commanded. “If she’s going to be a Vance, she needs to survive five minutes with me.”
Chloe touched Julian’s arm gently, giving him a reassuring nod. “It’s fine, Julian. I’ll be right out.”
She followed Arthur into a magnificent library smelling of old paper and expensive leather. Arthur sat behind a massive mahogany desk and immediately pulled out a leather-bound checkbook. He grabbed a fountain pen and quickly scribbled across the paper before tearing it out and sliding it across the desk toward Chloe.
“There is one million dollars on that check,” Arthur said flatly, his eyes narrowing. “Take it, leave my grandson, and never contact him again. You can go back to your life, infinitely richer, and I can find him a suitable wife.”
Chloe stared at the check. It was more money than she could comprehend. It was ten times what Julian was paying her. She looked up at the old man, realizing exactly what this was. It was the ultimate test.
Without breaking eye contact, Chloe reached out, picked up the check, and deliberately tore it perfectly in half, placing the pieces back on the desk.
“I appreciate your generosity, Mr. Vance,” Chloe said, her voice steady and clear. “But I’m not here for your money. I make my own living, and I’m quite proud of the life I am building. I am here because I care about Julian. If you think a piece of paper can buy me off, then you don’t know me, and you clearly don’t understand why your grandson chose me.”
A heavy silence filled the room. Arthur stared at the torn pieces of the million-dollar check. Slowly, the hard lines around his mouth began to soften. A loud, booming laugh suddenly erupted from his chest, echoing off the high ceiling.
“Well I’ll be damned,” Arthur chuckled, shaking his head. “He finally found one. He finally found a real woman.” He stood up, leaning on his cane, and offered Chloe a genuine smile. “Welcome to the family, my dear. Let’s go have some dinner.”
When Chloe walked back out to the foyer, Julian looked like he was ready to storm the room. He let out a massive sigh of relief when he saw his grandfather smiling. As Arthur walked ahead toward the dining room, Julian pulled Chloe aside, his eyes full of awe.
“What happened in there?” Julian whispered. “What did he say?”
Chloe smiled playfully, looking down at the diamond ring on her finger. “Let’s just say I passed the interview. But Julian?”
“Yes?”
“If we’re going to make this believable for the next six months,” Chloe murmured, a genuine spark igniting between them, “you are going to have to stop looking at me like a business partner, and start looking at me like a real fiancé.”
Julian looked down at her, suddenly realizing that the line between their fake contract and real life was already beginning to dangerously, beautifully blur.
