[KW015] Story Continuation: The Price of Envy

The crisp autumn wind whipped across the pristine courtyard of the elite Crestview Academy, but Jessica didn’t shiver. The bespoke wool blazer she wore—paid for with cash borrowed from men who broke kneecaps for a living—kept her perfectly warm. She adjusted the collar of her shirt, projecting the effortless arrogance of old money.

“So, you’re the new transfer student?” the short-haired girl, Tiffany, asked, her eyes darting to the limited-edition designer bag draped over Jessica’s arm. “I’m Tiffany. My father owns Vanguard Logistics.”

Jessica offered a practiced, dismissive smile. “Charmed. I’m Victoria. My family prefers to keep our holdings private. European real estate, mostly. Vanguard is… cute, though. Good for regional shipping.”

Tiffany blinked, momentarily stunned by the casual insult disguised as a compliment. Before she could recover, a murmur rippled through the crowd on the stairs.

Walking through the double oak doors of the academy was Grace, parading around in Jessica’s original body. She wore a gaudy, diamond-encrusted necklace that completely clashed with the school uniform. She flanked herself with two sycophantic students, laughing entirely too loudly. To the untrained eye, she looked like a billionaire heiress. To Jessica, she looked like a fraud trying desperately to play a role she didn’t understand.

“Ugh, here comes Jessica Sterling,” Tiffany whispered, rolling her eyes. “She’s been acting so weird lately. Like, nouveau riche weird. Anyway, she’s throwing this massive birthday party this weekend at the Sterling Estate. The whole school is invited.”

“Is she now?” Jessica murmured, her eyes locking onto the girl who had stolen her life. “How delightful. I do love a good party.”

Later that afternoon, in the school’s opulent cafeteria, Grace was holding court. She had ordered a private catering service to deliver sushi served on gold leaf, loudly bragging about the cost to anyone who would listen.

Jessica timed her entrance perfectly. She walked in not with catered food, but with a sleek, black titanium Centurion card, casually handing it to her newly hired personal assistant—a towering man in a tailored suit who was actually one of the loan shark’s debt collectors keeping a very close eye on his investment.

“Marcus, please secure a reservation at Le Bernardin for the weekend,” Jessica said, her voice carrying just enough to slice through Grace’s bragging. “And have the pilot prep the Gulfstream. If the truffles aren’t flown in fresh from Alba, I simply won’t eat them.”

The cafeteria went dead silent. Grace’s gold-leaf sushi suddenly looked cheap.

Grace stood up, her face flushed with indignation. She stormed over to Jessica’s table, crossing her arms. It was surreal for Jessica to look at her own face twisted into such an ugly, envious expression.

“Excuse me,” Grace snapped. “Who are you supposed to be? I run things around here. My father is Richard Sterling.”

Jessica didn’t stand up. She slowly took a sip of sparkling water, letting the silence stretch to establish dominance. “Richard Sterling? Ah, yes. The tech sector. A volatile market, really. We looked into acquiring his firm last quarter but decided the profit margins were too thin. I’m Victoria.”

Grace’s jaw dropped. The sheer audacity of this new girl was infuriating. The body-swapping system had given Grace the Sterling fortune, but it hadn’t given her the unshakeable confidence of someone truly born into power.

“You’re lying,” Grace sneered, though doubt flickered in her eyes. “No one is richer than the Sterlings in this city.”

“Wealth isn’t about the city you live in, darling,” Jessica replied, offering a pitying smile. “It’s about the continents you own. But I wouldn’t expect you to understand macroeconomics. I heard you’re throwing a little birthday gathering? How quaint. I suppose I could make an appearance. It’s always nice to support local families.”

Grace’s hands curled into fists. The system interface, invisible to everyone else, pulsed warmly against her consciousness. Target identified. Net worth estimated: Uncalculable. Desire to swap: Rising.

“You think you’re better than me?” Grace hissed, leaning in close. “I can have whatever I want. Anything.”

“We’ll see,” Jessica whispered back, her eyes flashing with a dangerous, predatory light. “See you at the party, ‘Jessica’.”

The next three days were a masterclass in psychological warfare. Jessica burned through the loan shark money at a terrifying rate. She arrived at school in a different hyper-car every day. She ‘casually’ donated a new wing to the academy library in cash. She made sure Grace saw every single transaction, every single display of unfathomable, limitless wealth.

By the night of the birthday party, the trap was fully set.

The Sterling Estate was decorated lavishly, but the moment Jessica arrived, all eyes shifted to her. She stepped out of a vintage Rolls-Royce, wearing a custom couture gown that made Grace’s expensive boutique dress look like a cheap knockoff. Around Jessica’s neck rested a sapphire pendant so large it caught the light of every chandelier in the ballroom. It was a rental, heavily insured by the loan sharks, but Grace didn’t know that.

Grace stood by the grand staircase, seething with a rage so pure it was intoxicating. The system was practically screaming in her mind, feeding on her astronomical levels of envy.

Jessica glided across the room, stopping directly in front of Grace.

“Happy birthday,” Jessica said, handing Grace a small, velvet box.

Grace snatched it, opening it aggressively. Inside were the keys to a private island in the Mediterranean. (Fake documents, meticulously forged by Marcus, the enforcer).

“I bought it yesterday,” Jessica lied flawlessly. “But the weather is too humid for my taste. Consider it a hand-me-down.”

The insult hit Grace like a physical blow. The humiliation of being upstaged in her own house, in front of the entire elite class of the city, was too much. The greed that had driven her to steal Jessica’s life the first time completely took over her rational thought. Why settle for a billionaire’s daughter when she could become a global trillionaire?

“You really think you’re untouchable, Victoria?” Grace whispered, her eyes manic. She reached out, her fingers trembling with desperate anticipation.

Jessica didn’t pull away. She stood perfectly still, her heart hammering against her ribs. Do it. Take the bait.

“I can take everything from you,” Grace sneered, grabbing Jessica’s wrist tightly. “System… Activate!”

The world dissolved into a blinding flash of ethereal light. Time stopped. The deafening music of the ballroom faded into a high-pitched ringing. Jessica felt the sickening, twisting sensation of her soul being violently ripped from her chest and pulled through the void.

When the light faded, the heavy bass of the party music slammed back into reality.

Jessica blinked, her vision swimming. She looked down at her hands. They were soft, perfectly manicured, and adorned with the Sterling family signet ring. She looked up and saw her own reflection in the grand ballroom mirror.

She was back. The real Jessica Sterling was back in her own body.

Opposite her, Grace stumbled backward in the borrowed couture gown. She looked down at her hands, letting out a victorious, unhinged laugh. “I did it! I’m Victoria! I own the world!”

Jessica adjusted her dress, a cold, ruthless smile spreading across her real face. “Enjoy it, Grace.”

Just then, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom swung open. Marcus, the towering enforcer, walked in. He wasn’t dressed like a personal assistant anymore. He was accompanied by four very large, very angry men.

Marcus locked eyes with Grace, who was currently inhabiting the body of ‘Victoria’.

“Victoria,” Marcus said, his voice echoing over the music, cold and menacing. “The forty-eight-hour grace period is over. You owe the boss twenty-five million dollars, plus the 40% weekly interest. And we are here to collect.”

Grace’s victorious laugh died in her throat. The color drained completely from her stolen face. She looked at Marcus, then at the forged deed to the island, and finally at Jessica.

“Twenty-five… million?” Grace choked out, pure terror gripping her lungs. “No. No, wait! I’m not her! I swapped—”

“I don’t care about your excuses,” Marcus interrupted, stepping forward and grabbing Grace roughly by the arm. “You signed the contracts in blood. You pay up tonight, or we start taking collateral. Starting with your fingers.”

As the enforcers dragged a screaming, thrashing Grace out of the ballroom, Jessica picked up a glass of champagne from a passing tray. She took a slow, satisfying sip, watching the woman who tried to ruin her life get dragged into a nightmare of her own making.

In the world of the elite, wealth was power. But as Grace had just learned the hard way, debt was a death sentence.
