[SC007] The Continuation of the Story – Watch What Happens When Mom Checks The Security Camera And Uncovers A Genius Teen Hacker

Sarah stared at the crisp, high-definition feed from her smart home security system. The screen showed her fifteen-year-old son, Leo, sitting at his desk. He hadn’t moved a muscle in two minutes. The pristine image resolution of the new remote monitoring camera she had installed before their Aspen trip was supposed to bring her peace of mind. Instead, it was setting off every alarm bell in her head.

“Look at him, Chloe,” Sarah muttered, bringing the phone closer to her face, her brown sunglasses slipping slightly down her tan faux-fur hat. “Just look at him. It’s too perfect. The desk is clean. The textbook is open. He’s… studying on a Saturday afternoon.”

Chloe took a sip from her glass, the firelight catching the yellow lenses of the ski goggles perched on her white hat. She laughed, a rich, warm sound that echoed in the quiet of the lodge. “Sarah, honey, take the win. The boy is studying. Maybe turning fifteen flipped a switch in his brain. You know, maturity and all that.”

Sarah shook her head, tapping the screen to zoom in. “You don’t understand the level of psychological warfare my son operates on. Remember last Thanksgiving? He reprogrammed my smart speaker to play the sound of a buzzing mosquito at random intervals. I nearly tore the drywall out trying to find it.”

“Okay, that was brilliant, you have to admit,” Chloe chuckled, shifting comfortably in her plush jacket.

“It was diabolical,” Sarah corrected, though a tiny, reluctant smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. “And now, I leave him home alone with his father for the weekend, and he’s voluntarily studying AP European History? No. Something is terribly wrong.”

Sarah pressed her thumb against the screen, panning the digital camera feed to the left. The bedroom was immaculate. The bed was made. The clothes were put away.

“Wait a minute,” Sarah breathed, her eyes widening.

“What is it?” Chloe asked, leaning over the armrest of the heavy leather sofa to get a better look.

“Watch his right arm,” Sarah instructed, her voice dropping to a whisper as if Leo could hear them through the phone.

They watched the screen for thirty seconds. The boy’s blonde curls remained perfectly still. The right arm, resting on the desk near the textbook, didn’t twitch. Not even a millimeter.

“He’s not breathing,” Chloe said, her playful demeanor vanishing. “Sarah, why isn’t he moving?”

“Because,” Sarah said, a mixture of profound relief and deep irritation washing over her, “that is not my son.”

Sarah quickly minimized the camera app and opened her home’s central smart hub application. She bypassed the security cameras and went straight to the system logs. Her fingers flew across the screen, checking the digital footprint of her household.

“What are you doing?” Chloe asked.

“I am pulling back the curtain on the Wizard of Oz,” Sarah declared. “Look at this. The camera in his room hasn’t used any bandwidth in the last three hours. The timestamp in the corner of the video is running, but the actual data feed was interrupted at 1:15 PM.”

Chloe gasped. “He looped the footage?”

“He didn’t just loop it,” Sarah said, her voice dripping with a mix of maternal annoyance and sheer awe. “He set up a dedicated local server to broadcast a pre-recorded, two-hour loop of him studying to the main security network. He spoofed the IP address so the app wouldn’t flag it as offline.”

Chloe threw her head back and roared with laughter. “Sarah! You are raising a cyber-security genius! You need to stop worrying about his grades and just start sending his resume to the Pentagon.”

“It gets worse,” Sarah sighed, swiping back to the frozen video feed. “Zoom in on the hand. Look really closely at the lighting.”

Chloe squinted at the screen. The shadow falling across the boy’s hand didn’t match the direction of the light coming from the desk lamp. “Is that…?”

“It’s a mannequin arm,” Sarah confirmed, rubbing her temples. “He dressed a mannequin from the drama department in his favorite hoodie, positioned it in his chair, and filmed it for two hours to create the perfect seamless loop.”

“Okay, but if he’s not in his room,” Chloe reasoned, looking around the expansive, timber-framed ski lodge, “where is he?”

Right on cue, Sarah’s phone vibrated violently. A notification flashed across the top of the screen from her banking app.

Alert: Charge of $145.50 at ‘Tony’s Extreme Paintball & Pizza Lounge’.

Sarah stared at the notification, the mystery immediately solved. She slowly lowered the phone, her face a mask of weary acceptance.

“Well,” Chloe said, trying to suppress a grin, “I guess he really did put the mischief behind him. He outsourced it to Tony’s Paintball.”

Sarah let out a long, exhausted laugh, leaning back against the sofa cushions. “I can’t even ground him, Chloe. The sheer technical proficiency required to pull this off… I’m honestly just impressed. But I am absolutely making his father pay that credit card bill.”

Chloe raised her glass in a toast. “To Leo. The Ferris Bueller of the digital age.”

“To Leo,” Sarah agreed, clinking her phone against Chloe’s glass. “May his firewall never be breached, and may he hopefully never use his powers for evil.”

As they laughed, Sarah’s phone buzzed one more time. It was a text message from an unknown number.

“Have fun on the slopes, Mom! Don’t worry, I’m studying really hard. – L”

Sarah just shook her head, a smile finally breaking through. “Mhm-mm. Sure you are, kid. Sure you are.”
