Cramped inside the suffocating, dusty confines of a massive corrugated cardboard box, the curly-haired teenager was already regretting every single life choice that had led him to this exact moment. He was wearing a bright red t-shirt under a black jacket, sweating profusely, and trying to keep his balance while completely enveloped in darkness. Outside the box, his best friend and co-conspirator was supposed to be executing a flawless, viral-worthy prank. Instead, he was about to ruin the entire masterpiece.
The plan was simple: dress up as a delivery driver, wheel a giant, human-sized package up to the front door, ring the bell, and wait for the epic jump-scare. To sell the illusion, his friend was wearing a bright red polo shirt with a fake, ironically misspelled “RedEx” logo ironed onto the chest. The giant box was even secured to a heavy-duty blue metal hand truck. It was the perfect setup. But perfection requires patience, a virtue the fake delivery guy completely lacked.
Instead of a polite, professional delivery knock, the “RedEx” driver began hammering his fist against the front door with the aggressive intensity of a SWAT team conducting a morning raid. The loud, rhythmic banging echoed off the porch walls, shaking the entire house.
From inside the darkness of the box, the curly-haired boy couldn’t take it anymore. He shifted his weight, wincing at the noise. “Don’t knock like you’re the police!” he aggressively whispered, his voice muffled by the thick cardboard walls.
Irritated by the sudden backseat driving from a piece of supposed freight, the fake delivery guy didn’t hesitate. He pulled back his leg and swiftly kicked the side of the cardboard box.
“Ow!” the boy inside yelped, the sudden impact throwing him off balance.
The delivery guy leaned closer to the box, his expression a mix of frustration and comedic desperation. “I have to get her attention, don’t I?” he argued right back, gesturing wildly toward the solid wooden door. “If she doesn’t answer, we don’t have a video!”
He wasn’t wrong. A prank video without a victim was just two guys sweating on a porch. Determined to make the magic happen, he turned back to the door and resumed his relentless, heavy-handed banging, desperately hoping the camera hidden in the nearby bushes was capturing his dedication to the craft.
Cut to the inside of the house. The aggressive knocking had finally done its job. Walking quickly down the wooden staircase was their target: a young woman with long, flowing dark hair. She was dressed casually in a comfortable grey zip-up hoodie over black leggings, wearing stylish black-rimmed glasses. The relentless pounding on the door was clearly getting on her nerves.
“I’m coming,” she called out, her voice dripping with extreme annoyance. “Sheesh.” She quickened her pace, ready to give whoever was trying to break down her front door a piece of her mind.
Meanwhile, oblivious to the fact that their target was mere seconds away from opening the door, the operation on the front porch was rapidly descending into complete chaos. The curly-haired boy inside the box, a self-proclaimed comedic genius, was entirely fed up with his partner’s lack of subtlety.
“This is my plan,” he scolded from inside the box, his tone sharp and authoritative despite his ridiculous predicament. “Please do not tell me how to—”
THWACK.
Before he could finish his sentence, the fake delivery guy completely lost his patience and delivered a swift, powerful kick right to the center of the box. This time, the impact was too much for the structural integrity of the cardboard. With a loud tearing sound, a jagged hole ripped open right in the middle of the box, letting a blinding beam of daylight into the dark enclosure.
The curly-haired boy leaned forward, his face suddenly visible through the freshly torn hole. His eyes were wide with a mixture of disbelief and genuine outrage. “Did you just kick the box again?” he demanded, staring through the jagged cardboard flap at his friend.
The delivery guy didn’t even answer with words. He simply looked at the hole, looked at his friend’s outraged face, and then, in a moment of pure, unadulterated comedic spite, kicked the box for a third time. Bam.
That was the absolute final straw. The element of surprise was completely dead, the prank was ruined, and it was time for war. The curly-haired boy violently shoved the top flaps of the giant box open, bursting out of his hiding spot like a jack-in-the-box fueled by pure rage. He climbed up over the cardboard rim, pointing an accusatory finger directly at the fake delivery man.
“If you kick that box!” he shouted, throwing his arms up as he scrambled completely out of his hiding spot, entirely abandoning the carefully constructed blue dolly setup. The delivery guy immediately fired back, raising his voice to defend his terrible acting choices, and within seconds, the two best friends were standing on the porch, furiously arguing at the top of their lungs, completely forgetting about the hidden camera, the prank, and the house they were standing in front of.
Click.
The sound of the deadbolt turning instantly froze them both in place. The argument died in their throats as the heavy front door slowly swung inward.
There stood the girl in the grey hoodie, her hand still resting on the doorknob. She took one look at the scene in front of her. To her left was a guy in a painfully fake “RedEx” polo shirt, breathing heavily and looking guilty. To her right was a curly-haired teenager standing half-inside a heavily damaged, ripped cardboard box that was awkwardly strapped to a blue metal hand truck.
A heavy, awkward silence fell over the porch. The autumn breeze gently rustled the leaves in the yard.
“So,” she finally said, adjusting her glasses as she leaned against the doorframe, crossing her arms over her chest. A slow, highly unamused smirk crept onto her face. “Which one of you is supposed to be the priority overnight shipping, and why does my package look like it just lost a fistfight in the driveway?”
The fake delivery guy slowly lowered his hands, looking completely defeated. He nervously cleared his throat, trying to salvage any shred of dignity. “Uh… signature required?” he squeaked out, offering a weak, trembling smile.
The curly-haired boy, realizing the absolute absurdity of his situation, slowly began to sink back down into the torn box, hoping to somehow disappear into the cardboard ruins. “Just… return to sender,” he mumbled, pulling one of the loose flaps over his head. “Please, just return to sender.”
She let out a loud sigh, shaking her head. “You guys know the camera in the bushes has a blinking red light on it, right? I saw you setting it up twenty minutes ago from my bedroom window.”
Both boys groaned in unison. Not only had they completely botched the execution, destroyed their main prop, and started a loud domestic dispute on the front porch, but the entire master plan had been compromised from the very beginning. The ultimate cardboard box delivery prank was officially a total failure, but as the three of them finally erupted into uncontrollable laughter on the front steps, they knew they at least had enough hilarious footage for one incredible outtake reel.
