[SC013] The Story Continues: The Glitch in the Alibi

Sarah Miller stared at the gold iPhone in her hand as if it had suddenly turned into a venomous snake. The crackling of the massive stone fireplace in the Aspen ski lodge, which had sounded so comforting just moments ago, now felt like a mocking countdown clock.

Across the mahogany coffee table, Valerie lowered her espresso martini, the coffee beans floating on the crema clinking softly against the glass. The relaxed, post-skiing glow completely vanished from her face.

“What do you mean, studying?” Valerie asked, leaning forward, the plush white fur of her vest brushing against her knees. “Sarah, you told me Mikey was grounded for the ‘indoor drone delivery’ incident. You confiscated his gaming rig. You locked down the Wi-Fi. The kid considers reading a cereal box to be an egregious violation of his human rights. He doesn’t just randomly study on a Saturday afternoon.”

“I know,” Sarah whispered, her eyes glued to the five-inch screen displaying the security camera feed of her son’s bedroom back in California.

On the screen, Mikey sat at his sleek white desk, a model of academic diligence. The sun streamed through his bedroom window, illuminating his curly blonde hair. He occasionally reached up to scratch his head, then went back to intensely staring at the open textbook on his desk. It was a picture-perfect scene of a rehabilitated teenager.

“Look at him,” Sarah murmured, a deep sense of dread pooling in her stomach. “He’s been sitting there for five straight minutes. He hasn’t spun in his chair. He hasn’t thrown a tennis ball against the wall. He hasn’t tried to dismantle the smoke detector.”

Valerie stood up, abandoning her cocktail, and walked over to stand behind Sarah’s green velvet chair. She squinted at the high-definition security feed. “Maybe the grounding finally broke him? Maybe he had an epiphany about his future?”

“¡Dios mío, Val, you cannot be this naive,” Sarah muttered, her stress causing a sliver of her childhood Spanish to slip out. “This is Mikey. The boy who rewired our smart fridge to only dispense ice when someone answered a math riddle. This is a setup. This is an alibi.”

Sarah’s thumbs flew across the screen. She pinched the glass to digitally zoom in on the security footage. The image of Mikey sitting at the desk grew larger, slightly pixelated but still clear enough to make out details.

“Watch his right hand,” Sarah instructed, her voice dropping to an anxious whisper.

Valerie leaned closer, her eyes narrowing. On the screen, the digital version of Mikey reached up to scratch his head again. The movement was smooth, but as his hand moved back down toward the desk, something bizarre happened. For a fraction of a second, as his fingers passed in front of a heavily patterned poster on his wall, the edges of his hand seemed to blur and warp. It looked as if his fingers melted slightly into the background before snapping back into focus.

Valerie gasped, putting a hand over her mouth. “Sarah… did his hand just glitch?”

Sarah’s face went pale. “It’s not a glitch in the camera. It’s a loop. But it’s not just a recorded video loop. Look at the lighting. The shadows on the floor are shifting in real-time to match the sun outside.”

“I don’t understand,” Valerie said, her perfectly manicured nails digging into the back of Sarah’s chair. “How is he doing that?”

“Prompt engineering,” Sarah said, the realization hitting her like an icy snowball to the chest. “Last month, I caught him awake at 3:00 AM researching AI video generation tools. He was obsessing over creating hyper-realistic scripts for Sora2 and VEO3. He told me he was just ‘exploring the digital frontier.’ I thought he was just being a nerd.”

Sarah tapped the screen aggressively. “He didn’t just record a video of himself studying. He fed hours of security footage into an AI engine, wrote a script prompting it to generate a continuous, real-time deepfake of himself studying, and somehow hijacked our home network to broadcast the VEO3 output directly to my security app!”

“But why?” Valerie asked, her voice tinged with a mixture of horror and genuine, undeniable respect. “Why go through all that trouble to fake a live stream?”

Sarah slowly lowered the phone, her eyes wide as she stared blankly into the roaring fireplace. “Because,” she said slowly, the terrifying truth dawning on her, “if he wants me to think he is sitting safely in his bedroom… it means he is currently somewhere he absolutely should not be, doing something incredibly illegal.”

Three states away, in a sweltering garage command center, Mikey sneezed.

He rubbed his nose, adjusting the headset over his curly blonde hair. He was sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with his best friend, Leo, staring at a bank of glowing monitors. They were currently navigating a highly modified, remote-controlled rover through the air conditioning ducts of an internet celebrity’s mansion.

“You good, man?” Leo asked, not taking his eyes off the rover’s camera feed.

“Yeah,” Mikey grinned, a mischievous spark in his eyes. “Just allergies. Hey, check the server status on the home decoy feed. Is the VEO3 generation holding up?”

Leo typed rapidly on a secondary laptop. A small window popped up, showing the exact fake feed Sarah was currently panicking over in Aspen. “Rendering flawlessly at 60 frames per second. The AI is successfully matching the ambient sunlight through your window. To your mom’s security app, you are currently reading Chapter 4 of your AP History textbook.”

“Perfect,” Mikey laughed, grabbing the joystick control for the rover’s payload drop mechanism. “By the time she figures out it’s an AI script, we’ll have dropped the prank box, extracted the rover, and I’ll be back in my real bed playing video games. It’s the perfect crime.”

Back in the luxury ski lodge, Sarah was already throwing her fur hat onto the sofa and dialing her neighbor’s phone number.

“What are you doing?” Valerie asked, rushing to grab her discarded espresso martini, realizing the relaxing afternoon was officially over.

“I’m calling Mrs. Higgins from next door to go knock on his window,” Sarah said, her voice tight with panic. “And then I’m calling the airlines. The internet’s greatest menace is off his leash, Val. And God help whoever he has targeted today.”
