The Ultimate Heist Plan: When Your Entire Crew Abandons You But You Still Need To Pull Off The Impossible Mission

Mikey stared at the cracked screen of his iPhone, the dial tone ringing in his ears like a cruel joke. Lose my number. Sam’s automated voice echoed in his head. If Sam was out, that meant she had talked to Frank. And if Frank was out, Mikey was flying completely solo on the most important night of his life.

He looked back up at the corkboard in his bedroom. The photos of the window washers, the red push-pins, the sticky notes reminding him to bypass the security cameras on the 42nd floor of the Sterling Tech building. He had spent six months coding “Project Apex,” a revolutionary data-compression algorithm that was going to change the tech industry. And then, his former mentor, the ruthless CEO Marcus Sterling, had simply stolen the hard drive off Mikey’s desk and claimed the intellectual property as his own.

Tonight was the launch party. Tonight was the only window of opportunity to swap Sterling’s stolen drive with a decoy before the corporate investors locked the code into the global server.

“There has to be someone else,” Mikey muttered, his thumb hovering over his contact list. He couldn’t climb the building and hack the mainframe at the same time. He needed a distraction, and he needed a ghost in the system.

His thumb stopped on a name he hadn’t spoken to in over a year. Leo the Rat.

Mikey swallowed his pride and tapped the green icon. It rang three times before a groggy voice answered over a backdrop of loud electronic music.

“Who is this and why are you interrupting my raid?” Leo barked.

“Leo, it’s Mikey.”

The music instantly muted. “Mikey? Bro, you dropped off the map. I heard Sterling crushed you.”

“He stole my code, Leo,” Mikey said, pacing his bedroom. “And I’m getting it back tonight. But Sam and Frank bailed on me. I need a hacker who can loop the security feeds on the 42nd floor, and I need someone crazy enough to ride a window-washing rig with me.”

Silence hung on the line. Then, Leo chuckled. “You know, Sterling banned my IP from the global servers last year. I’ve been looking for a reason to introduce a little malware to his precious mainframe. I’m in for the tech. But I don’t do heights, man. You need a squirrel for that.”

Mikey closed his eyes, thinking frantically. A squirrel. Someone agile, fearless, and with a grudge against corporate suits. A smile crept back onto his face.

“I know just the girl,” Mikey said. “Meet me at the 24-hour diner on 5th Avenue in twenty minutes.”

Mikey hung up and immediately dialed Chloe. She was a parkour instructor who had once been kicked out of a Sterling Tech sponsored event for protesting their environmental policies.

“Chloe,” Mikey said the moment she picked up. “How would you like to scale a glass tower and stick it to Marcus Sterling?”

“I thought you’d never ask,” she replied coolly.

An hour later, the newly formed trio sat in a dimly lit booth at the back of the diner. Mikey spread the blueprints across the sticky table.

“Here’s the play,” Mikey whispered, pointing to the schematic. “The launch party is on the ground floor. The building will be empty, but security will be tight. Leo, you’ll be parked in the alley across the street in my dad’s van. You need to tap into their fiber-optic junction box and loop the cameras on the east face of the building.”

Leo adjusted his thick glasses, chewing on a French fry. “Child’s play. I can give you exactly a twelve-minute window before the automated firewall detects the loop and resets the feed.”

“Twelve minutes is tight,” Chloe noted, tying her dark hair into a tight braid. “That rig is heavy. Getting to the 42nd floor will take at least five minutes.”

“Which leaves us seven minutes to pop the window lock, swap the drives, and repel down,” Mikey confirmed. “We can’t fail. If Sterling presents my code tonight, it legally becomes his.”

By 11:30 PM, the neon lights of the city reflected off the massive glass exterior of the Sterling Tech headquarters. The baseline of the party music on the ground floor vibrated through the pavement.

“I’m in,” Leo’s voice crackled over the earpieces Mikey and Chloe wore. “Cameras on the east face are officially showing a pre-recorded loop of an empty wall. You are ghosts. Go.”

Chloe, dressed in dark tactical gear, unclipped the heavy padlock securing the window-washing rig at the base of the alley. She moved with incredible fluidity, stepping onto the metal platform. Mikey followed, his heart hammering against his ribs. He hit the power switch, and the motorized winch began to grind, slowly lifting them into the dark sky.

The city fell away beneath them. Cars turned into glowing ants. The wind howled, rattling the metal cage. Mikey gripped the railing, his knuckles white.

“Don’t look down, mastermind,” Chloe smirked, entirely in her element.

“Floor 40… 41… 42,” Leo announced in their ears. “Stop there. You have eight minutes left on the loop.”

Chloe hit the brake. They hovered outside a massive, dark office. Sterling’s office. Inside, a single glass pedestal held a silver flash drive—Project Apex.

Mikey pulled a heavy-duty suction cup and a glass-cutting laser from his backpack. He secured the suction cup, turned on the laser, and carefully traced a perfect circle near the window’s latch. With a soft pop, he pulled the glass away, reaching his hand through the hole to unlock the massive pane.

They slid the window open and stepped into the plush, quiet office. It smelled like expensive leather and greed.

“Four minutes,” Leo warned. “And guys… we have a problem. A security guard just badged into the elevator on the 40th floor. He’s doing a random sweep.”

Panic spiked in Mikey’s chest. “You said we had twelve minutes!”

“I did! But human error isn’t in my algorithm! He’s coming up. You need to move, now!”

Mikey sprinted to the pedestal. It was protected by a biometric scanner. “Chloe, the decryption brute-forcer!”

Chloe tossed him a small black device. Mikey plugged it into the pedestal’s USB port. Lines of code scrambled across the tiny screen.

“Elevator just pinged the 42nd floor,” Leo shouted. “He’s walking down the hall!”

“Come on, come on…” Mikey muttered.

Click. The glass case slid open. Mikey grabbed the silver drive, shoved a fake replica in its place, and pocketed his life’s work.

“Got it! Let’s go!” Mikey yelled.

They leaped back through the open window onto the swaying metal rig. Chloe slammed the window shut just as the office door swung open, the beam of a heavy flashlight sweeping across the room.

Mikey and Chloe flattened themselves against the floor of the rig, holding their breath in the freezing wind. The guard shone his light over the pedestal, saw the (fake) drive, grunted, and walked away.

“He bought it,” Mikey whispered, exhaling a massive breath of relief.

“Cameras resetting in three, two, one,” Leo said over the comms. “Drop that rig now!”

Chloe slammed the release lever. The rig descended rapidly into the safety of the dark alleyway. As their boots hit the solid concrete, Mikey pulled the silver flash drive from his pocket. The neon streetlights caught its metallic surface.

He didn’t need Sam. He didn’t need Frank. He just needed the right people who believed in the impossible.

“Let’s go get some pancakes,” Mikey smiled. “My treat.”
